So the latest Sonic game, Sonic Mania, has been out on every current home console for at least a week now, I'm wondering who else has played it yet. I preordered the Collector's Edition (which is pretty rad as well) for the PC/Steam version, but I also bought the regular release for Switch; I was planning on eventually getting it for Switch to begin with, but the Steam release got delayed for a couple of weeks and I didn't want to keep waiting for it. There's a bit of a fiasco with the PC version with how SEGA handled things, but I don't really want to get into that here, as none of that is really related to the game itself.
The gameplay is a spiritual successor to Sonic 3 and Knuckles, and features a lot of similar mechanics and features. One of the main draws is that a lot of zones from previous games return (there are also a few entirely new zones which are also really cool), but they all are remixed pretty respectfully, so while they look about the same as they did before, they aren't just the same old stages you played before. The whole game is built around nostalgia and fanservice, being created by Sonic fans for Sonic fans (the game was developed by some people that are pretty big in the Sonic fangame/ROM hacking community, including Christian Whitehead who also did the excellent port and definitive version of Sonic CD on PS3/X360/Steam). I already beat it with Sonic with Tails, Knuckles, and Tails, got all of the Chaos Emeralds with each of them, and got gold on all the Blue Sphere stages on the Switch version, I'll just have to do the same for the Steam version at some point and I'll be looking forward to it when I do.
As my username may imply, I'm kind of a big fan of classic Sonic. For those of you who liked classic Sonic games, you need to get Sonic Mania, it's easily one of the best games in the franchise and you're doing yourself a great disservice for not doing so. I strongly recommend picking it up. Personally, I'd love to see this team do another classic Sonic game with entirely original zones.
