Note: This explanation will more than likely take at least a few days for me to write the whole thing.
So, it’s really been a while since I’ve had much to do with really anything in the Kirby fandom... I don’t know if anyone will read this, but I figured I would put it out there that I’m fine and doing well. Also, my new computer is done, so if I really wanted to give this site a bit more polish I actually can if I felt the need to do so. Additionally, I decided to deactivate the ad-free plan on here for two big reasons, being the lack of activity and interest on here and the fact that I messed up when I had to update my debit card information, which caused me to get charged twice for it at once which I found very annoying .
Anyway, I know that I mysteriously disappeared from the Kirby Discord servers I was involved in around October 2018 if memory serves, and I think I stopped posting in the subreddit around the same time as that. From that point on, my only real contact with any part of the Kirby fandom was via Flight Rising—which I’m still active on—though I don’t post much on there, either. I know I haven’t done a whole lot on here in close to a year and a half, nor have I made a single post on here in that time. As I explained in that post from nearly a year and a half ago, this is due very largely to lack of community interest and a lack of time on my end. Both of these things are still issues and probably still will be for the foreseeable future.
In short, I have two main reasons why I disappeared from almost all Kirby-related social media I’ve been involved in. The first one is because I greatly disliked a lot of the behavior I was seeing primarily on the r/Kirby Discord server and also somewhat on the subreddit itself. I wasn’t a fan of the constant swearing and somewhat offensive dank memes that people liked to post a lot, and I felt like I couldn’t do much of anything about it because I felt like I was the only one who was bothered by it, so I never said anything. Of course there were other Kirby servers I was in that were a bit more strict, but that brings me to my second issue: the other servers either weren’t especially active or they were just not that fun. So, for me, it was a lose-lose situation no matter how I looked at it, and there actually was another issue that was the final nail in the coffin for me; that issue being something that is very personal to me and which will take a good bit of explanation in order for any of you to really understand my reasoning.
I’ll start off by giving an explanation of my history with the Kirby fandom. Sometime in the fall of 2012, my brother came home from his preschool with a sheet of Kirby Mass Attack stickers. I started becoming interested in trying new games around that time since I was SUPER picky before I got New Super Mario Bros. 2 that summer, though I was still apprehensive when my brother came home with the stickers. I don’t remember how exactly my mom and I reacted when we saw the stickers, though neither one of us threw them out, and one of us put them on a table. After a while, I couldn’t help but think of how cute the stickers were, so I eventually decided that I would download the first Kirby game via the 3DS Virtual Console at some point. If memory serves, during late 2012 and early 2013, I saw some blogs on Tumblr and I decided to create an account under the name of my old alias, “Hydreigon6507”, in late February of 2013, thus beginning my actual story with the Kirby fandom.
My Tumblr blog started off with me describing my misadventures of me (badly) playing the original Legend of Zelda on the 3DS’s Virtual Console. Some time before I started my blog, however, I put Kirby on my list of games I wanted to play, so after a few days of some FABULOUS misadventures in Zelda, I decided to download Kirby’s Dream Land, once again on the 3DS’s Virtual Console. On about February 21, 2013 (thank you save point time stamps), I started playing Kirby’s Dream Land, and I decided I really liked the game within five minutes of playing it. I messed around a bit in the game for a few days before I decided to download Kirby’s Adventure, which I absolutely LOVED despite me not being very good at it at first. Kirby’s Adventure was the game that really got me into the Kirby series, and it was the first game with my first favorite Kirby character: Meta Knight. During this time, I blogged a bit about the first two Kirby games and I started looking into the blogs of Kirby fans I could follow.
The Kirby fan blogs I followed on Tumblr were a mixed bag. One of the first Kirby fans I followed was a Meta Knight fan who posted a bit more inappropriate content than I originally thought, and I eventually wound up unfollowing him when I finally decided I was tired of seeing that stuff on my dashboard. There were several Kirby fans I followed during that time, most of whom posted varying degrees of Kirby fanart and whose blogs contained varying degrees of inappropriate content, which I discovered because I was a dumb teenager who decided early on that I would follow back. I unfollowed some people faster than others, Kirby fans and otherwise, and I continued to follow some people who posted inappropriate content because I became acquainted or became friends with them. During my time on Tumblr, I discovered roleplaying, which introduced me to these friends and a WHOLE lot of drama.
Roleplaying was the main thing that kept me on Tumblr as long as I was. I discovered a small group of Kirby roleplayers about a month or two after I signed up on Tumblr, and there was one person who I interacted with very frequently (I’ll just call her Sue for simplicity and privacy). Sue was quite involved in the group, and one day, she got into a horrible fight with someone else in the group. Sue became very depressed as a result, and I felt really bad for her, so I tried to help her feel better. As I roleplayed with Sue, I came up with some new Kirby original characters (OCs) and we came up with some story arcs of our OCs playing together and going on adventures. I was also depressed around that time, and since I felt I wasn’t getting enough attention, I stupidly decided to push the roleplays in a darker direction a bit. Fortunately, these roleplays didn’t really have a lasting negative effect on Sue, and I eventually came up with my favorite OC who, at the time, was a fuzzy Puffball who had a mild temperament and was almost always happy and super friendly: Gio.
Gio quickly became Sue’s favorite OC that I had, and I used him very frequently in our roleplays. Sue seemed to be getting less depressed as a result, as she wasn’t posting many things that seemed to reference her depressive state anymore. However, at the same time, I was seeing more and more inappropriate content on Tumblr and I was steadily getting more fed up as I kept seeing that and the new drama that was brewing within the roleplaying group I was in, so I deleted my account on Tumblr some six months after I joined. Sometime later, Sue contacted me via Fanfiction .net since I posted a bad and overly ambitious super crossover fanfic on there while I was still on Tumblr. Sue said that the drama calmed down a bit, that she missed me, and further indicated that she was feeling less depressed. A month or two after I left Tumblr, I searched for Kirby fan groups, and that’s how I found the Kirby Club.
